Projects in Asia
China In collaboration with the Foreign Affairs College,
Beijing, and the University of Montana, CMG conducted a pilot workshop for
both Chinese and American diplomats in China in the fall of 1999. This
unique program incorporated both interest-based negotiations methodology
and traditional Chinese statecraft into a common framework for resolving
differences. The program will then be expanded to provide training to
other Chinese and American professionals.
Indonesia CMG provided training for officials from the Ministry
of Trade, together with officials from other ministries participating in
the formulation and implementation of trade policy, and in conducting and
managing bilateral, regional and global trade negotiations. A diagnostic
study was conducted to analyze current inter-procedures for ministerial
cooperation in formulating and executing trade policy and negotiations,
and to develop recommendations for strengthening internal
coordination.
Malaysia
Joint training was conducted by CMG
for officials from the Ministries of Trade and Foreign Affairs, and from
state-owned enterprises, on managing foreign economic affairs.
National University of
Singapore In the the spring of 1999 CMG conducted
advanced negotiation skills training programs for senior Asian officials
and graduate students in partnership with the National University of
Singapore and Ewha (Womans University in South Korea).
Singapore Mediation Center

for judges and mediators as part of a systemic effort to institutionalize
the use of mediation in Singapore.
South Korea
CMG trained and advised senior
officials and economic analysts in every major ministry of the South
Korean Government on managing foreign relations, trade relations, and
relations with North Korea. The work focused on systematic preparation for
negotiations, negotiating with major powers, communicating
cross-culturally and using third parties effectively.
Sri Lanka At the request of
the Asia Foundation, CMG is conducting a preliminary evaluation of the
situation in Sri-Lanka and the feasibility of providing strategic
assistance to the parties involved in this conflict.
World Health Organization (WHO) -
South
East Asia CMG is working with WHO to strengthen
the negotiation capacity of the Ministries of Health in Asia and help them
to mobilize more resources for health sector projects in their countries.
After conducting seven inter-country workshops, CMG is now targeting
specific countries that require more assistance. A manual entitled,
"Negotiating Health Development," was produced and will be published and
disseminated widely by the WHO.
